Step 1 – How many devices do I need?
Determining the number of Sapient outlets and power strips you need is quick and easy. It is important to remember that more data is better. The more you know about the way people use your building, the easier it is to save on more than just your utility bill.
You can also get creative with Sapient power strips — our power strips have six sockets and they each meter independently, so feel free to consolidate single-sockets to a power strip when possible.
Workstations – 1 Sapient Power Strip
A desk, cubical or workstation will generally contain one or more of these types of devices:
- Desktop computer
- Computer monitor
- Small printer
- Cell phone
- Space heaters
Generally, you’ll need one power strip per workstation or cubical to adequately capture the energy consumed in that space. In some special cases, larger workstations or densely-packed workstations with more than six devices may require a greater number of Sapient power strips or outlets.
CAN I PLUG IN A REGULAR POWER STRIP INTO A SAPIENT OUTLET RATHER THAN USING A SAPIENT POWER STRIP?
Yes. However, you should be certain that cutting power to all the devices plugged into the power strip will not be an inconvenience. Also keep in mind that our machine learning algorithms will not be able to detect device types in this configuration.
Kitchen Areas – 1 Sapient Outlet per Appliance
The equipment you’re likely to see in the kitchen and recreational regions of your building are:
- Coffee/espresso machine
- Pizza oven
- Water heater/tea maker
Usually, these devices should receive one Sapient outlet each due to their relatively high individual power draw.
CAN I USE SAPIENT POWER STRIPS TO PLUG IN MULTIPLE APPLIANCES?
Yes; however, make sure that you’re not exceeding the maximum rated load your existing in-wall outlets are rated for (commonly 15 amps.)
Conference Rooms – 1 Sapient Outlet per TV & 1 Sapient Outlet per Power Puck
Conference rooms likely contain TVs, projectors and “power pucks” on conference room tables to power devices that are brought into meetings.
Use one Sapient outlet for the TV, one Sapient outlet for the projector, and one for any streaming or powered control boxes used for the TV/projector. Use one Sapient outlet for the entire table’s power puck.
CAN I USE SAPIENT POWER STRIPS FOR THE CENTRAL TABLE POWER PUCKS INSTEAD OF MY OWN?
Yes. In doing so, you’ll also be able to better detect the device types plugged into each of the Sapient power strip sockets. Keep in mind that comparatively less energy is saved by turning off tabletop equipment in conference rooms. This is why we recommend using a single Sapient outlet to meter the entire existing power puck.
Other – 1 Sapient Outlet per Other Equipment
These are some miscellaneous devices and pieces of equipment that you may run into when assessing the scale of your Sapient deployment:
- Vending machines
- Water fountains
- Freezers/refrigerators that are not in constant use
- Industrial printers
- Small Heater/AC units
- Presentation/public area TVs
- Non-integrated ambient or decorative lighting
Step 2 – Activating your system or getting your custom quote
Now that you know how many Sapient outlets and power strips you need.
In order for us to accurately evaluate your Sapient Enterprise deployment, we will need to know:
- The number of Sapient power strips and Sapient outlets that you need.
- A representative sample (at least six consecutive months) of your historical utility bills.
After receiving your quote, we will be able to process your hardware shipment, set up your Sapient account and activate your system. If you have questions, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 3 – Preparing for installation
While waiting for your Sapient system to arrive, make sure the occupants of your space are prepared to have their equipment unplugged for a few seconds while you install the Sapient outlets and power strips.
Here are some important things to keep in mind when preparing for installing your Sapient hardware.
- Pick a time that will be the least intrusive, possibly after hours and remember to inform any occupants that devices like desktop computers or 3D printers will need to be powered down before they are disconnected.
- It only takes a few seconds to set up each Sapient outlet and power strip, so you should be able to complete your installation in just one day.
